How to File a DMCA Complaint with a Website’s Host

We recommend monitoring your content to know when and where it has been published elsewhere. Should you find that your work has been used somewhere without your permission or in a manner that violates any stipulations you may have made (say, in a Creative Commons license), we recommend emailing a friendly takedown request to the person who posted it, then, if no action is taken, sending a DMCA complaint.

Should it be impossible to contact any specific individual who may have posted your content, or should he or she not respond to your escalating requests, we recommend sending a DMCA complaint to the individual’s host.

How to Find Someone’s Host

Visit any “whois” site such as WhoIsHostingThis and enter in the URL at which your copied content can be found.

Make a note of the individual’s IP address, nameservers, and host.

How to File Your DMCA Complaint

Equipped with the requisite intel about the site at which your copied content can be found, you may then visit the individual hosting service’s website to file your complaint.

Each website offers a slightly different path to filing complaints about intellectual property rights, though generally the process unfolds as follows:

  • You review the host’s copyright policy
  • You compose your DMCA complaint, making sure you meet their requirements (requirements are pretty uniform across all hosts)
  • You send your DMCA complaint (ideally via email, but perhaps also via fax or mail)
  • If your DMCA complaint was sent via email and does not receive a response within a week or so, you send an additional copy of the complaint via mail directly to the Host’s offices.

Below we offer a template you may use when sending your complaint (should a particular host not provide one), as well as instructions for submitting that complaint to major hosting websites.
