How to File a DMCA Complaint with a Major Website or Publishing Platform

Should you find that someone has published your work elsewhere online without your permission, we first recommend contacting that person directly, starting with a polite takedown request, then escalating to a DMCA complaint should the individual not respond in a timely manner.

Should this person not respond (or should you have no means of contacting him or her), we recommend contacting the site on which this person posted your content with a DMCA complaint

If the person has posted your work on an independent website, contact the host instead. You might also consider:

There are two broad types of third party platforms on which your stolen content might be published: a major blog/news outlet, or a major open publishing platform.

  • Blogs and news outlets: Have editorial standards and a controlled set of contributors
  • Open publishing platforms: Are open to the public and do not have very controlled editorial standards

You are far more likely to find unauthorized use of your content on an open publishing platform, however we will guide you through the process of filing DMCA complaints with both types of sites (and some major brands) below.

How to File a DMCA Complaint with a Major Website or Publishing Platform

The fastest way to file a DMCA complaint with a major website involves using the Control/Command + F keyboard shortcut within their Terms of Service and searching for the word “DMCA” or, if that yields nothing, “Copyright.”

This should point you to, at the best, their copyright policy and procedures for addressing DMCA complaints, and, at the worst, a contact email or address for submitting copyright complaints.

Utilize our template and site-specific procedures below for quick links and convenient shortcuts (use control/command + F to search for specific site names, such as “YouTube”).
