Courses and Lessons (5)

Why does Gigaverse offer courses?

Our courses are meant to simplify the experience launching an online career, though which one can earn an income from a hobby, talent, or passion.

Given the number of options out there and the rapid rate of change we experience online, figuring out how to make money from a hobby and establishing an online career (or even just building a solid digital identity) can be overwhelming. Which platforms are still relevant? How can I reduce my liability? What tools are most relevant to my work? What isn’t worth my time? These are all questions we hear people ask, and we want to address them.

We design our courses to act as one centralized place online where you can find the most up-to-date information and best practices regarding a particular online pursuit.

Because the internet is littered with misinformation and scams purporting to help in starting an online career using questionable, quick fixes, we take careful measures to ensure that all Gigaverse courses share standards and best practices utilized by established, trusted professionals within the online community.

What specific courses does Gigaverse offer?

We offer the following courses:

  • Internet Literacy 101: A foundational course for those who are not yet regular internet users, the lessons of this course cover basic internet culture, resources, tools, safety considerations, and legal issues.
  • Blogging: This course is the ultimate guide to modern blogging (vlogging included) for true enthusiasts and vivacious personalities.
  • Online Sales: A course designed for online merchants who choose to run a stand alone online shop as well as those who additionally or exclusively sell through major channels such as Amazon, eBay, or Etsy.
  • Online Business: This course is designed for professionals, whether they sell services online or just want to establish themselves as well-known thought leaders.
  • Freelance writing: There are boundless opportunities for freelance writers online; this course is designed to help them derive more income, coverage, and opportunities out of their work.
  • Social Media and Community Management: Our community management course touches on key metrics and best practices that can help community managers more effectively improve consumer-business relations.
  • Online Arts and Design: The internet reveals vast opportunities to artists. This course covers tools and practices that can help online artists achieve more coverage and appreciation.
  • Online Authorship: Our online authorship course is designed to help writers ride the massive waves of change reverberating throughout the publishing industry to new levels of success.
  • Online Entertainment: Our online entertainment course keeps talented game, video series, and webcomic creators up to date on the latest and most relevant best practices, tools, and resources for those providing online entertainment.
  • Online Journalism: This course is designed to help on-the-ground reporters share information that can be more easily verified (and therefore utilized) by individuals and newsrooms alike.

How frequently are courses and lessons updated?

Courses and lessons are updated on a weekly (if not daily) basis. We take care to change our lessons as soon as a new development occurs and are constantly adding new information to (and removing outdated information from) each course to make sure that our curriculum is as up to date and comprehensive as possible.

How can I recommend changes to Gigaverse’s curriculum and lessons?

Please contact us. It is important that our lessons provide the most comprehensive, up to date information possible, so any suggestions you might have will be most appreciated.

Credentials (11)

Why does Gigaverse issue credentials?

It can be difficult to trust digital identities, especially if they are not tied to a physical identity with which we are familiar (e.g. a friend, colleague, or family member).

Many existing sites and services issue credentials through activity-based metrics or badges and peer endorsements, but we’ve found that it is very easy for non-trustworthy and non-competent people to game the system on all of these sites and appear to be trustworthy, when in reality they are the last person we would want you to trust.

We vet people internally and issue badges associated with our core courses to ensure that those to whom we issue credentials are (1) real (if anonymous) people who respond to communications, (2) actually adhering to the standards we associate with a particular badge (as clearly outlined within each course), and (3) not being endorsed based on popularity, favoritism, or ephemeral whims.

By maintaining control over the vetting process and vetting people against very clear sets of criteria, we can show why a person should be trusted in addition to simply suggesting that they are trustworthy.

Why would I want credentials from Gigaverse?

Credentials from Gigaverse offer cred and connections.

Our credentials indicate that you have very concretely demonstrated your competence with regard to a particular online pursuit (be it community management or online selling). Whereas credentials and badges on other sites rely on popularity and automated metrics (that can only be measured on one site or through a small handful of sites through APIs), our badges are issued based on real communications and human checks run on your work.

Once you earn credentials, you are added to an active pool of Gigaverse members that businesses, organizations, and other online citizens peruse when looking for talented, trustworthy people to work with. We actively recruit talented members from this pool when companies come to us looking for potential employees and people to sponsor.

What are the perks associated with Gigaverse credentials?

The perks of becoming vetted and getting Gigaverse credentials include:

  • An ability to clearly demonstrate how you adhere to the best practices associated with a particular online pursuit
  • A place in our pool of members from which businesses, organizations, and other online citizens draw when looking for partners, people to sponsor, and potential employees
  • Credentials in the form of secure badges (issued through Mozilla’s Open Badge Infrastructure) that you can embed on your own websites to indicate your skill level

How do credentials on Gigaverse work (conceptually)?

Our credentials are indications that a Gigaverse member adheres to the standards and best practices associated with a particular online pursuit (such as being an online entertainer or social media and community manager).

Those with credentials have gone through a vetting process that differs from course to course but always includes person-to-person communications via email and voice calls / chats as well as a review of their showcased online profiles and their portfolio of work.

How to credentials on Gigaverse work (technically)?

Gigaverse credentials are issued and displayed through Mozilla’s Open Badge Infrastructure. We use their Issuer API to push badges to members’ digital backpacks and use their displayer API to pull badges from those backpacks and display them on our site. Other sites that utilize Mozilla’s Open Badge Displayer API can also display these badges.

Are Gigaverse credentials and their associated badges secure?

We chose to utilize Open Badges to issue and display Gigaverse’s credentials because they are more secure than something we could easily develop independently.

Open Badges are far more than just pretty pictures that can be embedded in a blog post or displayed on only one platform- they are metadata-rich images issued and displayed through Mozilla’s Open Badge API.

A badge you earn cannot be ‘stolen’ by someone else as it links back to your unique Gigaverse profile and must be drawn from your personal Mozilla Backpack, which is associated with your email address and a password.

Can I display my credentials elsewhere online?

Displaying your Gigaverse credentials is both easy and highly encouraged.

Mozilla’s Open Badge team is actively helping personal and professional networks integrate their Displayer API, so you should see more options to display your Gigaverse credentials (and other Open Badges) on your favorite social networks soon.

You can display your badges on your WordPress site by using the WPBadger plugin.

Visit your Mozilla Backpack for more options.

Do I have to have a Mozilla Backpack to earn and display credentials?

Yes, however creating one is easy, and you can simply do so after earning your first badge. All that is required to create a Mozilla Persona (which enables you to have a Mozilla Backpack) is your email address and a password you would like to use.

How often will I have to renew my credentials?

Most credentials require renewal on an annual basis.

Why does Gigaverse charge money for vetting and credentials?

Eventually, we hope to find a way to vet Gigaverse members with the help of trustworthy individuals volunteering their time so we don’t have to charge a vetting fee. Until then, we pledge to not charge any more than we need to break even.

Expedited Vetting (3)

What exactly happens during the expedited vetting process?

Once you purchase expedited vetting on Gigaverse:

  • We will review your accomplishments on Gigaverse online portfolio
  • We will send you one or more emails testing your credential-specific skills
  • Should you qualify for the credentials for which you applied, they will be issued

The process unfolds as follows:

  1. You order credentials on Gigaverse
  2. We process your order and set up a vetting checklist, which outlines the credential-specific elements we need to review
  3. We check to make sure you have a complete Gigaverse profile
  4. We check to make sure you have passed the course associated with the credentials fir which you are being vetted
  5. We check your Gigaverse profile to review your credentials’ requirements regarding publicly-available information
  6. We run similar checks on external online properties linked to from your Gigaverse profile
  7. We email you to test additional credential-related skills (emails must be answered within 36 hours)
  8. Should you meet all the requirements, we will issue your credentials
  9. You may then use Credly to display those credentials elsewhere using Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and Mozilla’s Open Badge Infrastructure

What happens if I fail the expedited vetting process?

During our expedited vetting process, we will notify you if we come across something that prevents us from issuing the credentials for which you applied. If you amend the issue within seven days, you may still pass the vetting process.

If you do not or cannot amend the issue we identify within seven days, you will need to re-apply to be vetted once more (which includes paying for the process again), so we strongly encourage you to thoroughly review a course’s vetting standards before applying for credentials.

Issues that you may (or would) not be able to amend within seven days (and should therefore watch out for) include:

  • Pervasive grammatical errors (errors across so many channels of content it would be difficult or impractical to amend it all)
  • Content that consistently violates our standards for ethical conduct, copyright, sourcing, citation, and/or verification
  • Course completion (should you not have actually passed the required courses associated with credentials when you purchase expedited vetting)
  • Email responses that you send after more than 36 hours have passed

If I fail the expedited vetting process, why will I not be refunded?

If we refunded people who didn’t pass vetting, we would have a financial incentive to approve people during the vetting process, which would endanger the value and reliability of the credentials we issue.

Mentorship Sessions (3)

Why does Gigaverse provide mentorship?

We believe strongly in the power of relationships and active dialogue, and we also want to provide members with as much help and guidance as possible.

Our courses are designed to save you time and hassle as you choose platforms, tools, and tactics that will help you attain your goals. Everything you should know about a particular online pursuit can be found within each of our course’s lessons and those lessons’ related guides. That said, we know that many people still prefer to have a real person walk them through the process and help them adapt our curriculum, advice, and expertise to their particular goals. This is why we offer mentorship sessions, in which we add a human element to our collective lessons, resources, and expertise.

How are most mentoring sessions structured?

Mentorship sessions can be purchased as 30 or 60 minute time blocks, or a series of recurring sessions (which come at a lower cost). Sessions are booked with specific people, so be sure to select a mentor whose expertise closely matches your personal needs.

Before sessions begin, we will email you to establish basic goals that may set the premise of the session or session (e.g. you may wish to get additional help with a specific course, or ask several specific questions about a unique challenge you face). To make sure that you do not miss anything, we share notes from each session with you in a private Google Document after the session has ended.

How are mentoring sessions scheduled?

Once you purchase mentoring sessions or a series, your mentor will send you an email about setting up a time and date for your call. Each mentor may use a different scheduling system; Gigaverse staff uses Google Calendar.

Mentoring sessions must be scheduled within a three months of their purchase date (e.g. session one: this month, session two: next month, session three: two months from now).

Peer Review-Based Vetting (5)

How does peer review-based vetting work?

Our peer review-based vetting system enables you to earn credentials on Gigaverse for free by:

  • Accomplishing tasks independently
  • Getting endorsed by fellow Gigaverse members for your skills, proficiency, and conduct
  • Endorsing other Gigaverse members when you are willing to vouch for their skills, proficiency, and conduct

Accomplishments include automatic achievements, such as course completion, and submission-based achievements, such as profile completion (which you confirm by submitting the URL of your completed Gigaverse profile for admins to review).

Endorsements require nominations regarding specific skill sets, grammar proficiency, and adherence to our site’s standards for ethical conduct, copyright, sourcing, citation, and verification. For an endorsement to be applied to a member’s account, it must be approved by a Gigaverse admin (who verifies that the endorsement is legitimate). Admins will only accept nominations for endorsement from members who have completed their Gigaverse profiles, submitted them for review, and had them approved.

Each set of credentials requires a different mix of accomplishments and endorsements. To review the various requirements, peruse our credentials’ official pages and checklists.

For more information on the peer review-based vetting process, visit our general guide to vetting.

Why are two endorsements required for each requirement?

When going through our peer review-based vetting process, you will find that you must be endorsed not by one, but two fellow members with regard to your specialized skills and standards adherence.

We require at least two endorsements to bring additional security to the vetting process.

Why do I have to submit at least six successful endorsements to qualify for credentials through the peer review system?

To earn credentials through our peer review-based vetting system, you must submit at least six endorsements vouching for fellow Gigaverse members’ course-specific skills, grammar proficiency, and/or adherence to Gigaverse standards. Every time one of your nominations for endorsement is accepted by a Gigaverse admin, you earn ten points (and by accumulating 60 points, you will meet the endorsement requirements to earn a set of advanced credentials).

We have made endorsements a requirement for two reasons:

  • Reviewing others’ skills, grammar proficiency, and conduct with a critical eye will help you sharpen your own skills
  • Given that you rely on others’ endorsements to earn credentials for free, we think it’s only fair that you return the favor

Concerned about the time and effort it will take to endorse other people? Feel free to specialize in a single type of endorsement.

Do you know our standards really well? Review fellow members and endorse them when it is clear they adhere to these codes of conduct. Are you a grammar pro? Review your fellow community members’ grammar proficiency. Did you just finish our Freelance Writing course? Review fellow members’ work and test their skills to endorse their freelance writing skills.

Once you become familiar with the review process for a particular behavior, proficiency, or skill, you will be able to find, review, and nominate fellow members quite efficiently.

Why must I have a complete, admin-approved profile for my endorsements to be accepted?

We do not want it to be easy to endorse one’s own work by creating a secondary dummy account on our site.

For this reason, one must have a complete Gigaverse profile that has been reviewed and approved by Gigaverse admins in order to have nominations for endorsement approved.

A complete Gigaverse profile must present:

  • A non-pixelated profile photo
  • A bio free of significant grammatical errors that succinctly explains who you are (and specifically, what distinguishes you from other digital identities)
  • At least two links to complete expressions of your digital identity online
  • At least three portfolio pieces that (1) you created, (2) do not violate another’s copyright, and (3) link back to external any sources referenced (or provide citations)

Because it would be such a hassle to create an entirely new, separate account with a unique digital identity, we hope to make legitimate means of gaining endorsements more convenient than their illegitimate counterparts.

To submit your profile for review, copy its URL, then submit it through our profile completion page.

Why should I be careful when submitting nominations for endorsements?

Gigaverse admins review every endorsement nomination for accuracy to ensure that inaccurate endorsements are not applied to member’s accounts. Inaccurate nominations will be rejected.

Should you submit more than three nominations for endorsement that are rejected by admins for being inaccurate, future nominations you submit may never be reviewed. Without successful nominations (that is, nominations for endorsement that are approved by admins), you will not meet the endorsement requirement necessary to earn credentials through our free peer review system.

We therefore encourage you to endorse other people for skills, proficiency, and conduct only when you are sure your nominations for endorsement will be accepted. If your grammar skills are a bit rusty, do not vet others for grammar proficiency. If you have yet to intimately familiarize yourself with our standards, do not endorse others for their adherence to those standards.

Recruiting Services (1)

Why does Gigaverse provide recruiting services?

It can be very difficult to find trustworthy, competent people online- at least those who are reachable and looking for new opportunities.

We work with a large number of talented online professionals- ranging from creators to consultants, teachers, journalists, and managers. Though we like to think our courses, vetting, and mentorship help them succeed by enabling them to sharpen their skills and showcase their work, we also want to help them establish concrete relationships and contracts with businesses and partners.

We therefore offer recruiting services for businesses and individuals alike who are actively seeking individuals with skills related to our courses and credentials.

If you are interested in learning more about our recruiting services, please contact Simone Smith directly.

Reporting and Amending Credential Violations (7)

How would I know if someone does not meet the standards associated with Gigaverse credentials?

Someone does not meet the standards associated with Gigaverse credentials if she or she publishes content or demonstrates conduct that runs contrary to the standards associated with his or her credentials.

The standards associated with a certain set of credentials can be found at the beginning of each course or on the page through which one purchases vetting for a particular set of credentials.

How can I report credential violations?

To report a violation of Gigaverse credentials, visit the profile of the Gigaverse member in question and click the “Report” button above the section in which credentials are displayed.

A form will pop up into which you can share information helping us investigate the violation and address it properly. The more detail you provide, the better equipped we will be to take action.

Why is it important to report credential violations?

Our credentials indicate that a person’s digital identity adheres to a particular set of standards and best practices and only have value if credential holders actually do adhere to those standards.

Should just one person violate the standards associated with his or her credentials, the reputation of every other credential holder stands to suffer. So please, report any violations you might discover by clicking the “Report User” button on his or her profile.

What happens after I report a violation of credentials?

All reports of credential violations are reviewed by Gigaverse staff. Should we find that the violation is legitimate, we will contact the person in question and give him or her seven days to amend the issue. If the issue is not amended within that period of time, we will remove the violated credentials from the member’s profile.

What happens if I am cited for violating my credentials?

If you have violated some or all of your Gigaverse credentials by publishing content or exhibiting behavior associated with your digital identity (as displayed on Gigaverse) that does not adhere to the standards of those credentials, we will send you an email informing you of the issue and giving you seven days to amend it.

If your credential violation is not amended within seven days (or if the violation cannot be undone- e.g. was an action that cannot be taken back), your credentials will be revoked.

What happens if I lose credentials due to a violation?

If you lose credentials due to a violation, you may reapply for vetting, but only if you have not violated the standards associated with the credentials in question more than three times. In that case, you must wait at least eighteen months before reapplying.

What happens if I violate my credentials (even if I fix them) more than three times?

Even if you fix any error that lead to your credential violation every time you hear from us, you will lose your credentials if you violate our standards than three times. You may reapply for those credentials after six months have passed.

  8. Should you meet all the requirements, we will issue your credentials
  9. You may then use Credly to display those credentials elsewhere using Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and Mozilla’s Open Badge Infrastructure

How can I earn credentials on Gigaverse?

There are two means by which you can earn credentials on Gigaverse:

  1. Using our peer review system
  2. Using our expedited vetting system

Our peer review system is free and requires that you interact with other Gigaverse members, vetting them as they vet you. Our expedited vetting system enables you to be vetted in a speedy manner by Gigaverse admins, but is not free.

For more information, visit our complete guide to the Gigaverse vetting process.

How does peer review-based vetting work?

Our peer review-based vetting system enables you to earn credentials on Gigaverse for free by:

How was the vetting process designed?

To establish the baseline requirements applied to all credential holders, we did research on essential conditions for trust, utilizing resources like the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy essay on trust to ensure we had our bases covered.

To establish requirements for each certification class, we researched job descriptions and postings and spoke with leaders in each field (both the professionals and companies who work with them) to understand the various elements associated with proficiency. We then incorporated those elements seen as essential in each industry into our qualifying requirements (and curriculum).

Why are prompt email responses a required part of the vetting process?

Online professionals need to be accessible. We consider timely responses via email to be a key element of one’s digital functionality. Would you be willing to trust or work with someone who never answers the door when you ring the bell? Chances are you’re shaking your head ‘no.’ Neither would we- and for the same reasons, we would not find it easy to trust or work with someone who cannot promptly respond to important email messages.

Why is grammar proficiency a required part of the vetting process?

For now, Gigaverse only addresses English-speaking markets (we hope to change this in the future). For this reason, an ability to write mostly error-free English sentences is a requirement for Gigaverse certifications, as most potential partners and employers will expect high quality written content from vetted members.

Will I be able to protect my anonymity throughout the vetting process?

We take anonymity seriously and want to make it clear that when we review someone for certification, we are vetting their digital identity (perhaps one of many), not their physical identity.

Gigaverse members are welcome to protect their physical identities from the public throughout our vetting process. Our vetting standards require that you demonstrate your proficiency and professional demeanor. At no point do we require that you reveal your physical-world identity; you are free to operate under a pseudonym at all times.

Keep in mind that you will be expected to respond to emails (either from Gigaverse admins or Gigaverse members) during the vetting process. Be sure that the email you use to create your Gigaverse account and invite users to reach via your profile is not associated with a physical identity you wish to keep private.
